On a wet grey morning, driving along the south coast of Iceland, passing by the town of Höfn, I followed the ring road through Almannaskarðsgöng, a tunnel passing under mountains that push out to sea, and emerged to eastern blue skies and sweeping views across the rocky landscape and churning ocean. To the right clouds draped themselves over three large peaks, beneath which a hamlet clung to the narrow space between the sea and the up-rushing cliff face. A little further on, looking for somewhere to stop for lunch, I turned onto a rocky meandering track that led to a small waterfall.
