Wow, beautiful capture! I would love to see more images of this species (I've googled and not found much worth a second glance). I assume this was in the wild?

It is a rainbow lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus). They are very common in Australia even in urban area. Here is my shot: http://www.outtospace.com/archives/000303.php

Lorikeets spend their day eating nectar from flowers which does one of two things to them. They either get drunk from it and go crazy, or they get hyped on the sugar and go crazy. Classic birds that get quite tame in urban areas.

Thanks for the info, these guys are very noisy when agitated, we were staying at a caravan park and they fly around in flocks making a hell of a racket. Still, they're a lot more colourful than sparrows :)

'tis indeed a Rainbow Lorikeet. My ex-girlfriend used to have one. They make a lot of noise and crap everywhere, but funny as hell.

What sort of focal length are you using to get that kick-ass bokeh?

Great colours, great photograph. Especially that look in that parrot's eyes. A little bit evilness in such colourful appearance. Reminds me of other things... ;-)
