Wellenflieger in Motion - canon 20d w/17-40

I love this machine, it can be seen at fairs the world over. This one is at the CNE in Toronto for the next two weeks. Last year I caught a few shots of it, including this one, but this year I'm not leaving without some night shots.

Miles this is lovely and s captures the experience and fun of this ride, I love the fact you can almost make out the riders on the edge....

This is really cool, I love the motion and the one kid that is kinda in focus. The gloomy weather reminds me of the "wicked fair" series I did.

Do they order the same weather every year for the Ex?

  • Miles

Ryan, I will have a lot more of these this year, fairs have always seemed a bit mysterious or spooky to me, something film noirish about them. I think 'Strangers on a Train' was a big influence on that!

eulci, mid August is always stormy here. Last year, on the same day, there were big floods, a major road was washed away in the city. I think it's a rite of passage as autumn approaches. Today though is clear and blue with a few clouds, a good night for long exposures.

    Amazing!
    Love the motion and detail.
    Good job with the HDR.

Thanks Mark, this isn't HDR though, it's two variations on a RAW file combined manually (is that different to HDR?). As well as overlaying I used curves adjustments and dodging and burning.

Striking image; the contrast between sky and motion blurred color hold your attention; you think that something a little sinister is going to happen on that ride.

What a fantastic photo! I haven't seen a carousel this brilliant in years! The light was perfect to bring out all the jewel tones.. a bright sunny day just wouldn't have done this machine justice!!!

Your previous one is awesome, but I guess that I like this one even more. I really like the processing you've done here, but wonder why you didn't get a wider shot on this as you left something out on your previous as well - guess it suits the composition better :)

    Thanks everyone :)

This was shot at 1/8s and f22 handheld. I also had a polarising filter on the lens which helped slow the exposure down some as well.

For the processing I combined two versions of the RAW file, one for the sky and one for the rig. I did some curves adjustments, mainly to bring out the sky contrast, and then some dodging and burning, mostly on the riders and the of the machine itself where it was shadowy, using duplicate layers blended with 'multiply' and 'screen' along with layer masks.

Miles, really fun stuff - wild abandonment with a bit amounous brooding. Like the b&W clouds. - jp
