There is some definite power in the bottom shot. The way the light is coming in, showing off his beard but not letting you glimpse more of his eyes. Great shots.
Gotta love the character of the top one (I find it to be the stronger one). While I find it a little dark, I think the muted contrast really works to your advantage.
I like the second portrait better than the first but they are both stunning. Perfect exposures and interesting composition. I bet this man has many stories to tell.
