Race horses, captured at huntingdon race course on Saturday. I don't know much about horse racing but it's quite a thrill to kneel on the course as these huge animals come thundering by at thirty miles an hour.
Larger version.
Edit: Added a second shot, taken right after the first one. I liked the first shot because of the position of the horses relative to each other, and how the shadow of the first horse seems to fall on the second, enhancing that 'hitchcock-esque' look, where the image hovers between real and fake. In the second shot though, I like the shadows in a different way, the action is more rigorous. (I cloned my shadow out of the second).

Wow. This has to be one of your best shots in a while - and that's saying something. Just so great, Miles. You left my jaw on the floor...

Quite stunning depth of field, blurring and composition. Itigued by what you did to get it there but feel like a nerd for asking.
Very soft and delicious.

...that should be 'intrigued' of course but my typing is worse than my nerdiness.

Miles, I'm stunned! One tiny criticism though - your shadow keeps pulling my eye to the bottom of the picture. However, without a doubt - this is a truly outstanding shot!

Stunning shot. There are instances where the faked DOF work so well and this is one of them. Great work.

The picture looks great with your signature blurring & vignetting. Personally I really like that look, but do you ever wonder about the difference between having a style and being stuck in a rut?

This works on a whole lot of levels. It really hearkens back to the "old school" look -- 40s and 50s. Like it could have been taken on a Speed Graphic or something. Really, really nice.

Thanks for the comments!
I was trying to go for a look that focused very much on the horse and left the surroundings around it ambivalent, as before with one of the 'swing' shots I was going for a pseudo hitchcock feeling, where I think everything looks like it could be in a studio whether it's inside or out.

The DOF is amazing on this. All your photos have this wonderful cinema-esque look to it. This definitely looks like it was shot in a studio!

How'd you get so close? This is some great work, and the blur you added is just right. Maybe it's because of the inherent feeling of speed in the horse, but the blur doesn't seem to shrink him as much as lens blur usually does, it just seems to isolate the horse's exteremly impressive body.

Miles, it's time to shop this shot around. I bet you could get it mass-printed. It is truly an astonishing shot, and I'm sure many people would enjoy hanging on one of their walls. Including myself.

I came across MUTE when looking at images of the Brighton pier before attending university in Brighton; I'm now sitting in my dingy, overpriced student house. My home is about 10 minutes away from Huntingdon Racecourse. Brings me right back home when I used to go to the races with my family and makes me miss home all the more.
