Chris - canon 20dChris - canon 20dChris - canon 20d

Chris feeds the squirrels and pigeons in one of Toronto's parks. I know the portrait is a bit blown out but I hate asking people to 'pose' so I usually take what I can get, plus, this one, though technically flawed, does show what a nice guy he is I think.

I like the second and third one.. I like squirrels hand that is reaching to food and those deep eyes on third one.. he's happy i guess.

Sweet series. And the squirrels are also very professional models here.

I don't mind the blown out highlights in the portrait, it's very effective as it is. Nice series!

Oh, the second one is just amazing - you can almost hear the squirrel saying, "Gimme, gimme, GIMME!"

I like em all Miles - who care if one is a bit blown, I agree whenever possible just try and shoot them.

That middle shot of him feeding the squirrel is just priceless. Don't fret the highlights. Go pull out some classic photography books, look at the muddled shadows and blown highlights of some of the most famous photos ever, and then dismiss your cares.

The composition of the 2nd one is terrific. huge tension between the man's hand and the squirrel's fingers. i think it's because of the 2 parallel diagonals (the line of the arms and the line of the curb). Also, the twist in the body adds some tension.

This is great work, Miles. I am always amazed at how simple the fact is that these folks, like Chris, who so many pass off as insignificant, are the ones who take the time to feed the squirrels at the park. Gentle souls, good people, great series.

I have to agree, the outstretched fingers of the squirrel in the centre photo really help make the image.

    All three are wonderful! :)

Wonderful series. As for the portrait being a tad blown out I think it actually adds to the picture rather than subtract from it. I mean this is not a portrait taken in a studio so blown out part just shows me the environment the person is.

Frankly I don't see any technical flaws, but a lovely smile from heart.
    Great picture!

Nice series. Were these taken on different days, or did he just change hats during the shoot?

Haven't been to your site in a while (life gets in the way, ya know), and as soon as I loaded it up today, I just started laughing. That squirrel is hilarious! I think we have some at my work place that are often tempted to do the same thing... :)

i like the series. well done. it seems that you took the photos on two different times. his hat does not look the same in all of them.

Thanks all! I did take these on two different days, I have bumped into him a few times. My favourite is the top one, I like the square format of course but I also think the pigeon looks like he's feeling left out :)

    Happy days are here... :)

Just wondering - do your subjects for portraiture usually know they're on the web?

The first shot is amazing. This guy looks as if he could teach squirrels to do tricks.

Fantastic portrait, and the first two are quite wonderful as well.

The top two are to die for.... AND -- Black Squirrels are very rare -- and protected.... you gotta good one there!

Great catch on the second one, I totally agree with Sage Tyrtle, "GIMME!". Third one love the eyes but the hat brim shadow spoils it for me. I've never liked that particular shadow because it leaves the nose bright. Course that's just a personal peeve and certainly not a knock on your abilities.

These are adorable. Thanks for the kuddos on my photo... days later the server i was with, deleted my whole photoblog, so i'm back at square one now, trying to rebuild at least a few previous entries. BAH!

The portrait is perfect. Yes, there's some loss in the highlights... but you're drawn into his smile and his eyes... its wonderful. I want to buy a print of the first one!!

Email me if you'd really sell me one.
