These portraits are amazing Miles, really great work. The tones remind me of those really expensive B&W magazines where the paper makes all the tones kinda shine like silver (sorry I don't know enough magazines to name one :-\ ) Either way it's good stuff.
one of the strongest portraits i've seen in recent times miles
this man is drawed by life and i can read a lot of 'pain' in his eyes (in fact his smile is overcovered by a lot of sorrow)
your use of very selective focusing is perfectly appropriate and as mentioned before here, the greytones are extremely eyecatching
what i want to say miles... you succeeded in shooting an outstanding portrait!
congrats
(hope we can stay in contact, think our work is linked in a certain sense)
Another striking portrait.
The tension he so desperately holds onto in his mouth speaks volumes. And while his eyes attempt to remain hard and challenging, they also appear soft in a way that allows us into his world. Fantastic.
The portraits you've been posting lately are really fantastic. It's refreshing to see interesting shots of people, because most blogs are of different shots of cityscapes. These portrait shots make you want to know more about these people -- and I don't think it's because the people are more visually interesting than anyone else, it's the way you shoot them.

Thanks all.
Miklos, I'm not sure what he was in jail for, we talked as we walked for a few blocks and he told me he was "guilty, guilty as hell" for what he did but I didn't ask what that was.
thank you for visiting my blog. I don't speak english very well but i can say that your photo in home page is lovely. A real nice expression of a man. Bye!
Miles, I can only repeat what all the others have said. Your portraits are simply amazing and this is one of the best ones I've seen recently (and I like to leaf through quite a few magazines/websites). To be able to capture so many emotions, to be able to "connect" with another human beings and get them to reveal themselves to you is a mark of a great photographer. And it speaks volumes about the kind of a person you are as well...
err, well, no, not a LOT to add to what's been said already... This is stunning, and it reminded me immediately of the great work by Ryan. You have captured a life with a picture and a paragraph, fantastic work!
Good shot. The expression is priceless and the DOF is fantastic. However, I've noticed most of your portraits are very tightly cropped. I think this one might've worked better with a bit more room in the frame.
this with the 50mm 1.8 again? You manage to get such detail out of these man and a great dof, with the d70 I havn't used a lens faster than f3.5 so using a 1.8 would be a dream. your portraits are an inspiration recently.
I know the siutation all too well. I worked with a fellow who was released to the Maxwell Meighan shelter at Queen and Sherbourne. He was our for a year. In for four months and back out again (charges dropped). He started getting suicidal and after 9 lame attempts he jumped in front of a CP freight train last February. Not easy.
