2005-01-12: I posted this through the lens shot at Toronto Area Photobloggers (http://toronto.photobloggers.org) a while ago and it's my favourite shot of this type, so I'm posting it here too :)
Sorry, but I'm new to this. What's "through the lens" mean? All I can see is it looks like the picture's been heavily processed somehow with a big circle in the middle.
Michael, this is a digital photograph of the view through the ground-glass viewfinder of a Rolleicord twin-lens reflex camera. In these types of cameras two lenses are stacked one above the other: the bottom one leads to the film and the top one is coupled through a prism to a ground-glass screen with focussing aids on it (the circle, here) It tends to have a granular look because of the glass and vignetting due to uneven illumination of the glass.
Not a standard photographic technique but it works well!
dude this is amazing. the sky behind the van looks like its a stage background for a play or something. love this!

Hi Michael, Jordan's correct, this image actually hasn't been processed at all, that's what I love about this technique, the results are unpredictable and often quirky. The aesthetics aren't to everyone's taste for sure. The actual itself Rolleicord was used to take the two pics I posted yesterday.
Y'know Miles, I wonder if there is a ground glass with no grid lines and no focusing aid. If so, I'd use this technique with that until someone told me I was overdoing it.=)
first, thanks Jordon for the explanation,
second, Miles, love the "mood" of the photo created by the camera lenses...and the fact that it's all "unpredictable and quirky" really increases the kudos for such a cool shot
The colors and vignetting in this shot are gorgeous. I really like this. Your twin lens explanation was way over my head... but I'm very impressed. I hope someday I'll get better at photography so I can shoot like you
i thought it had had a hella lot of post-processing done to it until I read the comments, this really is an amazing shot either way but even better when you know how it wsa taken.
Amazing tones and look at the perfect focus on the front of the van that decrease in such a cool way over the whole subject. Amazing. These 6x6 are something!
You're always commenting at my site, and while I visit here often and love your photos, I never comment. While I'm here now, I just want to say how much I love your style, and these types of shots through the viewfinder are fantastic. The look and feel of them are great.

I like this one a lot it has such a "graphic" feeling. It really looks like an old commercial.
I especially like the the contrast in the blue sky.
I have to try this ground glass photography with my Rolleicord too.

Wonderfully original idea, though one to use sparingly! The muted colors work well.

I'd say this is my favorite of all the ones you've taken through the TLR. Amazing!

Your best rangefinder shot yet =) Lovely subject, shooting into the light really highlighted the vignetting

Yuri, no photoshop involved here, this is a 'ground glass' shot, take a look above for an explanation :)
